Weekend in Kyiv with Karo

So, I just got back from a weekend in Kyiv rehearsing with my beloved band. We had two concerts (Fri & Sat), and rehearsals all day Saturday. The last night, we performed most of our original songs (awesome) and some Huey Dunbar songs. The latter is not so awesome only because Lesya and I had to learn the lead for alternating songs in order for the band to practice performing them before Sweden. The disadvantage: Lesya and I sing in a different style to HD, so it was pretty stressful trying to get it right without any previous experience. But, we pulled it off ok (I think Lesya was pretty great) and the band sounded pretty awesome, too. The picture to the right here is of me & Ilya with two guys from a new Cuban band that plays in a couple of restaurants in Kyiv. The band is called Son de Oro and they came to see us on the Saturday night and drank with us afterwards. Unfortunately, I won't be around next week when Ilya will go to watch them perform, but I'm sure it'll be fun.

Rehearsals & performing went ok for me, considering I haven't done it in a while. On Saturday, there were 10 of us crammed in a tiny room trying to practice, and we didn't even have Andrei, our timbalero (who was unable to make it). But, amazingly, we ran through the entire Sweden playlist in 3 hours, after which we had coro rehearsal at Ilya's house. There is a new girl going to be singing with us in Sweden, Olya, and she has surprisingly caught on very quickly to our songs despite not previously knowing salsa or even Spanish, so I'm looking forward it. Because it's been so long since I updated the blog, I decided to treat everyone to a short clip of rehearsal. You can't see me or Olya but there's a quick shot of the rest of us after a while of the horns. That's Sergey playing trumpet solo in "Ya".

Otherwise, we're just trying to get everything together before the concert, and impatiently awaiting our new album's arrival, which should be here in a couple of weeks...... we even made new T-shirts for the band to celebrate (see next picture).

Ok, that's it for now. Hopefully it won't take us too long for the next update, and I'm looking forward to uploading the Sweden stuff!

  1. That was a good weekend. It always feels right when Karolina is with us ;)
She comes, and in the night - after one rehearsal - sings 4 new songs without a single mistake! She PERFECTLY does her job, being CREATIVE in every part of it! Guys from L'Oreal - you hear me, right? :)
